ALCF workshop prepares users for simulation, data, and learning research

In order to address the transforming research needs required across a variety of disciplines, the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility, held its second Simulation, Data, and Learning (SDL) Workshop.

From October 2 to October 4, 2018, the ALCF hosted more than 50 prospective and current users from laboratories and universities across the country. The training event enabled attendees to work side-by-side with ALCF staff members and industry experts from Intel, Cray, ARM, and Paratools to hone their abilities using tools, systems, and frameworks that can accelerate scientific computing on the threshold of the exascale era.

INCITE grants awarded to 62 computational research projects

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science announced 62 projects for 2019 aimed at accelerating discovery and innovation to address some of the world’s most challenging science problems through its Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program. Deploying on supercomputers that rank among the country’s most powerful, the projects originate in national laboratories, academia, and industry, and encompass a remarkable range of scientific inquiry.

Learning continues throughout summer for ALCF student interns

This summer, 45 students ranging from undergraduates to PhD candidates came to the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility to gain hands-on experience with some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. From exploring the potential of quantum computing to visualizing system logs of high-performance computing systems, this year’s intern class worked alongside ALCF staff mentors to tackle research projects that address issues at the forefront of scientific computing.

Supercomputer predicts optical and thermal properties of complex hybrid materials

Materials scientists at Duke University computationally predicted the electrical and optical properties of semiconductors made from extended organic molecules sandwiched by inorganic structures. The ability to build accurate models of these materials atom-by-atom will allow researchers to explore new material designs for next-generation devices.
