Simulations of laser-plasma interactions in targets for the National Ignition Facility and beyond

Project Description

In the 2010-2012 time frame, the National Ignition Facility will be creating a burning plasma in the laboratory, and an important aspect of this is understanding the coupling of laser energy to the ignition target. We propose to perform massively parallel laser beam propagation simulations using pF3D to quantify the energy coupling, and to investigate laser-plasma interaction kinetic effects with our massively parallel particle-in-cell code, Z3.
