Inspiring Innovation in Industry

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility showcased breakthrough science and engineering advances at the "Materials for Energy Applications" workshop, held January 30-February 1, 2012, in Berkeley, California. Representatives from all 17 Department of Energy national laboratories met with dozens of representatives from the private sector, ranging from startups such as Alphabet Energy to smaller Silicon Valley companies such as Nanosys to major corporations such as Chevron, Procter & Gamble, Honeywell and United Technologies. A total of 252 people participated.

Researchers at CERFACS and Laboratoire d’Aérologie recently received an INCITE award of 20 million hours at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) to study the contrail-to-cirrus transition. "This project aims at understanding the physics of the formation of contrail cirrus, which occurs when the effects of the atmospheric perturbations become predominant, compared to the dynamics of the aircraft wake where ice particles are initially trapped," notes INCITE PI Roberto Paoli, CERFACS.
