Argonne celebrates Margaret Butler at inaugural event

On June 11, Argonne National Laboratory held a special event to commemorate the extraordinary life and career of Margaret Butler, a pioneering Argonne scientist who paved the way for countless women to follow in her footsteps.

Presented by the ALCF and Argonne’s Women in Science and Technology (WIST) program, the inaugural “Margaret Butler Celebration of Women in Computational Science and Nuclear Engineering” consisted of speakers, a poster session, and a reception to highlight Margaret’s achievements and her enduring impact on women in science today.

3D potential through laser annihilation

A team of researchers at Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source (APS) and the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) is using Mira to study the effects of ultra-intense x-ray pulses on nanomaterials in an effort to visualize their 3D structures for a better understanding of biological mechanisms and for drug discovery.

ALCF’s new visualization and analysis cluster brings significant boost in memory capacity

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a DOE Office of Science User Facility, has officially launched Cooley, a new visualization and analysis cluster with nearly eight times the memory capacity of the facility’s previous system, Tukey.

The new system’s significant boost in memory, along with its state-of-the-art hardware, will help facility users to better analyze and explore the massive datasets that result from their simulations on Mira, the ALCF’s 10-petaflops IBM Blue Gene/Q supercomputer.

ALCF supercomputer helps identify materials to improve fuel production

Using Mira, researchers from the University of Minnesota have identified catalytic materials that could potentially improve the production of ethanol and petroleum products. The team executed a complex computational screening process to look at thousands of materials called zeolites to predict their performance for specific applications. This reduces the need for trial and error experimentation in the lab.

ALCF hosts high school girls for STEM event

As part of the 28th annual Science Careers in Search of Women (SCSW) conference, the young women were given the unique opportunity to investigate their areas of interest through interaction with many of Argonne’s world-class women scientists and engineers.

About 20 of the students chose to tour the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a DOE Office of Science User Facility, to learn more computational science.

The Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program is now accepting proposals for high-impact, computationally intensive research campaigns in a broad array of science, engineering and computer science domains.

From April 15 to June 26, INCITE’s open call provides an opportunity for researchers to make transformational advances in science and technology through large allocations of computer time and supporting resources at the Argonne and Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (LCF) centers, both U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facilities.

Introducing Aurora

Today, U.S. Department of Energy Under Secretary for Science and Energy Lynn Orr announced two new High Performance Computing (HPC) awards that continue to advance U.S. leadership in developing exascale computing. The announcement was made alongside leaders from Argonne National Laboratory and industry partners at Chicago’s tech start-up hub, 1871. 

Under the joint Collaboration of Oak Ridge, Argonne, and Lawrence Livermore (CORAL) initiative, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $200 million investment to deliver a next-generation supercomputer, known as Aurora, to the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF).

Researchers use Mira to peer inside high-temperature superconductors

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) are using supercomputing resources at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a DOE Office of Science User Facility, to shed light on the mysterious nature of high-temperature superconductors. With an improved understanding of the mechanisms that give rise to high-temperature superconductivity, scientists will be better equipped to design new materials and develop technologies that can benefit from them.

Advancing accelerator science using Mira

Leading a team from Fermilab, physicist James Amundson is working with the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility to perform the complex accelerator simulations aimed at reducing the risks and costs involved in developing the world’s highest intensity particle beams.

Computational scientists now have the opportunity to apply for the upcoming Argonne Training Program on Extreme-Scale Computing (ATPESC), to take place from August 2-14, 2015. The program provides intensive hands-on training on the key skills, approaches and tools to design, implement, and execute computational science and engineering applications on current supercomputers and the HPC systems of the future.
