Optimal Transition Paths to Cleaner Technology

Seminar

We discuss the optimal energy production schedule using conventional (old) and low-emission (new) technologies. The new technology has lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than the old one, but is more costly. The new technology is also subject to learning effects that reduce unit cost as cumulative output increases.

The problem is formulated as an optimal control problem and we present experience with several discretization schemes, and variations of the basic model.
